Presidents Blog - Network Issue 11

Congratulations to all our awards winners!

So last week we had the highlight of our year – the Excellence in HR awards. What can I say that hasn't already been said? Simply 'Wow, what a night!’ It was the most amazing event and as I said I was so proud to see so many great examples of excellence and best practice across the areas of people management, HR, OD, and education and training. It felt different, given it was my first as President and in a new venue and a new approach, but there was the same buzz in the air with the anticipation and excitement of the 500 plus people in the room.

As I said in my opening of the awards, it’s such a privilege to work in the best business in the world – the NHS – and in a profession that can make such a difference to people's lives. I used the word PRIDE to explain what the awards and our profession’s contribution to healthcare services are. For those that missed it, you can read the full version here. It was great to see so many ‘People, Partying and Proud’.

It's a huge achievement for everyone who was shortlisted or won an award and all of them are special and will make a difference for our patients and can do even more if shared across services and organisations.

If I had to single one award out, for me, it has to be our lifetime achievement award to Prof Michael West. His research and work on teamwork, engagement and leadership has had a major impact on the NHS, our people and the care provided to patients. Michael inspired me personally many years ago when I saw him doing one of his compassionate and engaging talks on leadership and teamwork. It immediately resonated with me, and what I saw was lacking in the 'traditional' leadership and management of the NHS at that time. I saw what good could look like. I would encourage all of you to acquaint yourself with his work and to adopt and embed the principles and practices within your own organisations.

I'd like to end by, once again, by thanking everyone involved in making it such a great night. I hope it's inspired you to start thinking about what you will enter for next year.
