An HPMA workshop delivered by: Dr Jane Keep

Our greatest tool at work wherever we work, whatever work we do is ourselves. Our physical body is foundational to that. How can we be the best we can, and enable those around us to be vital, healthy and well at work? 

Summary of the Session:

This one-day workshop takes you through the foundations of developing self-care at work as the foundation of effective performance.

Through practical participatory exercises, discussions and small and large group work you will be able to get to the nub of the most foundational aspects of any organization – our health, and what does or doesn’t support our vitality at work.

During the workshop we will look at the way we work, and the quality of the way we work, and how we can improve our workplace quality through simple self-caring practices.

The workshop will also explore the quality of the relationship we have with ourselves, and with others, and the impact this has on work. As well as knowing that self care offers those around us inspiration to do the same, we will look at what enables a culture of responsibility in workplaces and how to engender that through our own self care.


Session Outcomes:

  • Health and wellbeing at work – with years of H&WB interventions where are we now?
  • Our health as foundational to organizational productivity and effectiveness
  • To deepen our understanding of our greatest asset at work – ourselves
  • To review what we know about what gets in the way of our vitality at work and what the root causes to workplace stresses and strains are.
  • To realize the physical body is our best barometer in daily living, deepening our relationship with ourselves.
  • To learn to treat work as medicine – how do we take our daily dose?
  • For ourselves and our colleagues, to realize self-care is the new customer service – by caring for ourselves at work we naturally choose to serve others – what is self-care at work?
  • Self care as public health – health in health care
  • To consider our own resilience and nurturance as well as that of our colleagues and teams
  • To consider responsibility at work – where does it begin and end?
  • To design simple self-care at work programmes and interventions that are practical, real, and meaningful for all who work.


Organisational and Leadership Development Practitioner, Executive Coach and Strategic Advisor who enables purpose, responsibility and harmony at work. Jane has 30+ years experience across Organisational Development, Culture, Values, and Change Management within Further Education, Local Government, Not for Profit and NHS sectors, and more recently in the private sector.

Her roles have included Head of Organisational Development in two NHSFTs. She has expertise in mediation, leading large-scale (and globally coordinated) projects, working with Boards/Strategy Teams, and with staff at all levels of organisations.

She is a seasoned behavioural specialist with a deep understanding of the cultural, values based and behavioural issues in healthcare and related settings. Also extensive experience in initiating health and wellbeing programmes for productivity, and enabling staff engagement that encourages commitment and effective relationships at work.

Inclusive in nature and style Jane brings back the true meaning and simplicity of work for people, professions, services, industries, and communities.

Jane has a Phd on ‘Developing self-care at work’.

She has worked extensively with national policy committees, parliamentary health select committees, provided evidence for national policy initiatives, evaluated NHS policy nationally and locally, and evaluated and researched many NHS initiatives, programmes and services.

Jane has worked across whole systems and multiple stakeholders including local government, social care, voluntary/not for profit sector on a range of initiatives. Jane is experienced in researching, evaluating and setting quality and professional standards and policy, and has been a specialist advisor to the Department of Health and other national bodies.

She is currently a Trustee of a Charity, and is also working in part-time/associate contracts with two Universities (Birmingham and London South Bank), and has a number of short-term interim and freelance pieces of work in the NHS and wider public sector.

Jane loves working with people and loves work.

HR Competencies

The session will address Relationship Builder and Capacity Builder, both at level 3 from our HR Competency Framework. 

Relationship Builder: Builds and sustains relationships with stakeholders and takes personal responsibility to achieve excellent results. This is achieved through; developing collaborative relationships with stakeholders, demonstrating personal credibility, integrity and professionalism and demonstrating political awareness. . 

Capacity Builder: Assesses own capability and development needs, seeking out and acting on feedback and taking responsibility for your own CPD; demonstrates the ability to assess current professional, technical and commercial capability and capacity of teams and individuals and put in place plans to address development needs
