It’s that time of the year again!! HPMA NI presented our annual employment law conference and had our AGM in the Dunsilly Hotel, Antrim.
Always a popular event, the HPMA NI welcomed 75 delegates from across the Health and Social Care sector. Our chair, Diane Taylor, welcomed everybody to the conference and introduced June Turkington, Assistant Chief Legal Advisor, Business Services Organisation, to present an update on employment law in Northern Ireland. As always, June got the delegates to work on some case studies to get the brain cells going.
The areas of employment law covered by June were:
• Employment Act (NI) 2016
• Amendments to the NI Sex Discrimination Order
• Maternity – Childcare Vouchers
• Public Sector exit payments
• Constructive dismissal/ Health & Safety/ Risk Assessment
• Vicarious Liability
• National Living Wage
• Travel Time
It was then over to the delegates to test June’s knowledge on the areas covered, however, whilst June was able to provide responses to the questions asked, she also indicated that as some of the legislation was only new, it was difficult to provide definitive answers to some of the questions until case law became available.
The AGM took place straight after the conference with reports provided from the Finance Officer and Public Relations Officer and Secretary. Nominations were taken for existing members and new members. The final list of Committee names can be located on the HPMA NI website. Diane thanked everyone for their contribution to making last year a successful year and is looking forward to another exciting year in the world of Human Resources.
