NHS Confederation Annual Event

At the NHS Confederation annual event at Manchester Central last week, HPMA were for – the first time – part of the large exhibition, rubbing shoulders with legal firms, software companies and publishers. And in an attempt to raise our profile and also remind the many delegates of the importance of people managers in the NHS, we asked visitors to our stand to think about a manager in their career who had allowed them to flourish – and then post their name on a pink post-it note on our giant HPMA logo to thank them and APPRECIATE them! One note would then be randomly selected to win a prize.

Talking to delegates across the NHS including chairs, trade unionists, chief executives, medical directors, patients, directors of transformation and graduate trainees – we shared our vision, Improving Health Through People, as they reflected on the influential managers in their careers.

Some delegates were bursting to share many names, while others were struggling to find a name to nominate at all. But it was lovely to reminisce with visitors and feel the warmth they obviously had for great people managers. Some of these comments included: 'They allowed me the space to experiment', 'They were very kind', 'They challenged me', 'They simply sorted out the great mess' and 'They gave me the confidence to try... and fail'.

We have pulled one entry from the hat and are delighted to announce that our lucky winner is Maria Kane, Chief Executive at Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust, nominated by London member Julia Tybura. A gift bouquet is on its way to you! A big thank you to Maria for being an inspiring manager from both the HPMA and from Julia.

And congratulations to everyone else who was nominated for being inspiring managers! In alphabetical order, they were:
Suzie Bailey, Teekai Beach, Catharine Beardshaw, Christine Beasley, David Beswick, Paul Bridges, Chris Burke, Tom Carhill, Caroline Colkins, Daniel Colkins, Julie Cullen, Stephen Dalton, Isabelle de Wouters, James Devine, Janet Doran, Sarah Dugan, Pauline Fox, Tim Gilpin, Allan Goldman, Effie Göttgens, Julian Hartley, Simon Headington, Michelle Heeley, Peter Herring, Cath Hill, Matthew Hopkins, Mark Jeffries, Ian Joseph, Rob Larkman, Cheryl Lee, Anne-Marie McCabe, Candace Miller, Jane Milligan, Ali Mohammed, Danny Mortimer, Chris Mullen, Stuart Mullen, Julian Nettel, Deborah O’Dea, Portia Omo-Bare, Helen Pettersen, Mel Pickup, Ian Preedy, David Probert, Malcolm Rae, Suzanne Rankin, Andrew Ridley, David Rogers, Ray Rowden, Peter Rowe, Roy Rowlands, Steve Russell, Julie Screaton, Dena Smart, Peter Steer, Deborah Tarrant, Tracy Taylor, Heather Tierney-Moore, Martin Turner, Jo Wakeman, Clive Warbrick, Cathy Warwick, Johann Watson, Elaine Way, Diane Whittingham and Janet Williams.

Hopefully you have positive stories to share of your own great people managers. Or perhaps the lack of them in your career is a driver to make sure it's different for those following behind you in your organisation.? We would love to hear about how you have been inspired by a great manager or how you have motivated to change following a less positive experience, so please contact us at judith@chamberdunn.co.uk so we can share your views.
